A brief roundup of news and information regarding Norwich, Vermont that may have escaped your attention.

Windsor Police Chief Frank on community policing

“This is an opportunity for a cultural change and to reexamine what we’ve been doing. And I am so excited to be a part of that.” That is what new Police Chief Jennifer Frank recently told the Windsor Selectboard according to an article by Eagle Times reporter Patrick Adrian. (H/T C.M.) In Windsor’s new police chief shares vision for policing, Chief Frank is described as dedicated advocate of community policing.

I can’t help but think of the catchphrase of former Boston sportscaster Bob Lobel. “Why can’t we get players like that?”

Zuckerman nominated to U.S. Junior Nordic Combined Team

Lake Placid News reports that USA Nordic has nominated 45 American athletes to its 2021-22 national and junior nordic combined and ski jumping teams. Among those is Caleb Zuckerman, age 15, of Norwich and the Ford K. Sayre Memorial Ski Council. Mr. Zuckerman’s nomination is to the Nordic Combined Team, Men’s Junior Team. According to the story, final teams are named in the Fall.

Stave Puzzles’ virtual auction raises $3,300 to benefit the Ellen DeGeneres Wildlife Fund

Stave Puzzles in Norwich raised $3,300 for the Ellen DeGeneres Wildlife Fund in an auction of a one-of-a-kind puzzle, Guardian of the Band, according to a May 27 press release. The Ellen Show is popular at Stave. The program is “almost always on the television in their shop in the afternoon because she keeps the artisans and staff in good spirits and fills the building with laughter. “

David Tyler’s AirPods Pro

The Apple AirPods Pro of David Tyler of Norwich got a brief mention in the Wall Street Journal’s Personal Tech column by Nicole Nguyen. Seems that his AirPods were “magically connecting” to the wrong device. The WSJ column, Your AirPods Aren’t ‘Magically Connecting’? Here Are Some Things to Try, is here. For those who are not subscribers, the Norwich angle in the article reads: “David Tyler, of Norwich, Vt., was midsentence on a Zoom call when his AirPods Pro connected to his iPad unexpectedly. He now closes his iPad’s case and puts his phone face down to avoid the automatic switching.”

  1. Many of us are frustrated and disappointed at the loss of Chief Frank.

In my view, she was smart, competent, great with our children, responsive to community needs, and the best chief we have ever had. I was really shocked we lost her.

However, now that I have become aware of certain issues, I am not certain that we did not actually drive her away. Her requests for supplies from the selectboard were repeatedly rejected. Even body cameras she requested, for which a grant was given by the Byrne Foundation, were rejected by the selectboard. Why?

We all realize there are huge problems across our country with violent policing, but that has not been a problem here in Norwich, to my knowledge. Yet, it seems that some on our board are determined to make rifts where there have been none before.

Please see my upcoming letter to the selectboard summarizing an issue I brought to their attention recently. (It will be in the packet for the next meeting.) It remains to be seen whether I will get a response.

  2. I have not heard the reasons why Chief Frank left Norwich. Better job? Unhappy? More money?
    Anybody know?
